The Wickhams director on the whirlwind success of his award-winning online wine business started in lockdown
Joining me on today’s episode of The English Wine Diaries is Dan Farrell-Wright from online wine merchant Wickhams, The Great British Wine Merchant and our sponsor for this series of the podcast.
Dan started Wickhams in November 2020, at the height of the pandemic and quickly caught the attention of the wine industry. Within a year, the Newton Abbot-based company had been shortlisted for two Decanter wine awards.
The team at Wickhams are hugely passionate about knowing the story behind the wines they sell, a quarter of which come from England and Wales, so they can help encourage their customers to try new varieties from producers they might not have come across before.
This year, Wickhams made the finals in two categories at the International Wine Challenge Merchant Awards against heavyweights including Laithwaites and Waitrose and picked up the trophy for Specialist Merchant of the Year for their dedication to English wine.
We talk about how Dan first got into wine, why he started the business and why there was no question that Wickhams would specialise in English wine.
